VCU Dance Student Show

January 27th, 2013

Last week, I photographed the dress rehearsal of the VCU Student Show at Grace St. Theatre. This year’s students created a great program of unique, diverse work. It’s always so refreshing and exciting to see new work. This show is always a reminder of how awesome VCU’s choreography track is and the artists it helps create. Here are some of my favorite images from the rehearsal.

HAPPY NEW YEAR & SWAN LAKE!

January 16th, 2013

Happy New Year, Friends! Long time, no post! And just like every new year’s resolution, I promise to post more this year and not get carried away with projects (and my other full-time job) to the point I don’t have time to post. I am going to make a schedule and stick to it this year! Because I want to share all that is going on and not miss opportunities that fly by and then think it’s too late to share.

2012 was a great year of projects and a good reminder of how grateful I am to get to do what I love to do! However, the 10 hour days wear me down and I am hoping to find some balance this year between my work and rest/relaxation. I am looking forward to all the things to come in 2013 and new experiences and opportunities!

I am so excited for Richmond Ballet’s SWAN LAKE this February! I have never seen the ballet live, only recordings and I can’t wait to watch and photograph this classic, timeless ballet. I worked with the Marketing Team at Richmond Ballet to create a look for the marketing campaign for this show and I couldn’t be happier with it. It’s a different look from past projects and we were ecstatic to have our idea approved.

Here’s a look at the poster with my photograph, with design by Sarah Barton (who also happens to be helping me with a new look my photography logo and websites- more to come!). You don’t want to miss this! Get your tickets at www.etix.com or 1-800-514-3849.

Jeannette & Marty Wedding

August 23rd, 2012

When I first met Jeannette and Marty and discussed all their plans for their wedding, I couldn’t have been more excited. A ceremony in the Italian Gardens at Maymont, a reception at the Maymont Nature Center, a first look, a ceremony flash mob, choreographed first dance, and a photobooth. Jeannette and Marty are to say the least, FUN! Working in the performing arts field, this wedding was a well executed production. From all the cute details to their fun dances. I had a great time working with them and the weather could not have been any better!

Introducing the Photobooth!

June 26th, 2012

Every wedding with a photobooth that I have photographed or attended in the past few years has proved that a photobooth is always a huge hit. I have noticed that the majority of the guests spend most of their night in the photo booth taking photos (I am totally one of these people if I am a guest). It is so much fun and I have debated for a while if I wanted to add it to my wedding package. I have been hesitant mostly because it was another element I would have to worry about when shooting a wedding and I didn’t know who would “man” the booth for me and manage my equipment. I also knew I wanted to have a booth with enough space that people could get in large groups or even jump/dance around. :) But when my super fun wedding clients Jeannette and Marty requested it with their package, I knew it was a great time to start with the booth. I hired Katherine Smothers, a friend/co-worker of mine, as a second shooter and she set up the equipment and worked the booth for me at the reception. She did such an awesome job and it was so fun to watch the guests go in and out of the booth all night. I had a blast getting all the props and I hadn’t had that much fun prepping for a project in a while. I plan to incorporate different pattern backgrounds, props, and black & white images depending on the client’s interest. Here are some of my faves from the night. Sneak peek wedding photos coming soon!

Photoshoot for C.rowns & E.loquence

June 19th, 2012

Spring is a crazy time and I can’t believe I am just getting around to posting photos from this April shoot. I was approached by Kim Davis, a local bridal designer that specializes in custom made tiaras, to photograph her work for an upcoming bridal publication. Her line is called C.rowns & E.loquence: www.crownsandeloquence.com.  And the best part, one of my closest friends Jordan was the model! Jordan and I have worked and danced together for years, and I knew it would be so much fun to work with her on a shoot. And then our friend Blair Bigelow helped at the shoot as the stylist/make-up/hair extroadinaire. Blair has a great eye and has helped me at a mutual friend’s wedding in the past. I wish I could hire her to help me all the time! We went to the beautiful Cathedral of the Sacred Heart near VCU.

VCU DANCE NOW- February 2012

February 26th, 2012

VCU Dance Now last weekend was one of the best dance concerts I’ve seen in a while. The show featured a rich variety of work choreographed mostly by former teachers of mine. I only get one chance to photograph each piece in the dress rehearsal and while it’s a challenge to capture every thing when I don’t know what to expect, it’s so much fun to try and predict movements on stage. I guess this is why I am a dance photographer. :) But what makes the work come alive are the extremely talented dancers/performers/artists. It makes me proud to be an alum of the department.

Alice & Carl- Engagement

February 26th, 2012

Alice is one of my co-workers at Richmond Ballet, and I am thrilled to be photographing her wedding this October. I went to Belle Isle  and Carpenter Theatre here in Richmond with Alice and her fiance Carl, Lance Corporal in the Marines, to get some engagement shots during Nutcracker time. We had a great time and while it was a little chilly, it was definitely warm for late December. They are the cutest couple!

Willie- Headshots

January 27th, 2012

Willie Hinton is an amazing dance teacher, performer, and mentor in the community. He teaches for the Richmond Ballet outreach program Minds In Motion that I work for and he also teaches for the School of Richmond Ballet, and has worked with Pine Camp, Theatre IV, SPARC, etc. He’s also the choreographer of the Virginia Lottery commercials! :) Being a dancer, he’s a natural model!
